3 Questions To Ask Before You Buy Commercial Security Doors

Posted on: 6 January 2023

If you want to install new security doors on your business premises, then you put some thought into the type of doors you'll buy. While all security doors give some protection, it's important to choose doors that meet your specific needs.

So, before you buy doors, ask yourself the following questions.

1. What Kind of Security Do You Need?

Different security doors have different safety and protective benefits. The right doors will meet as many of your business and property security needs as possible.

For example, if you simply want a burglar-proof door, then a steel door with tamper-proof hinges and advanced locks will protect your entryways. However, if you also want protection against armed robberies, say because you keep a lot of cash or valuables on your premises, then a ballistics door is a better investment.

Environmental conditions and the risk of accidents also play a part in your decision-making process. For example, if you want additional fire protection, then fire-rated doors will protect your building and its occupants from fire, smoke, and heat. Or, doors with hurricane ratings will protect your building against severe weather events.

So, ask yourself how much security you need from your doors. Think about what they need to do to keep your property safe and secure.

2. Which Material Should You Use?

Security door materials play a big part in how a door works and how long it will last. For example, steel and fiberglass doors are strong and hard to breach.

On the other hand, wood doors might look nice; however, they are easy to breach. Give an intruder enough time to work, and they can break down a regular wood door.

If you really want to go with wood, then look at products with extra reinforcement. For example, some doors have a wood outer shell around a steel core. These doors will meet your cosmetic preferences but will still give you the security you need.

3. Do You Also Need New Door Frames?

The most efficient security door in the world won't work to optimum effect if its frame isn't strong and robust. The door itself might be able to withstand a lot of damage. However, it loses security coverage if someone can get into your building by targeting a weak or badly fitted frame.

If you are installing security doors for the first time, then it is worth installing new frames at the same time. However, if you're replacing old security doors with frames that are still in good shape, then you might be able to install doors in your current frames. If you aren't sure if this will work, then ask your security door retailer for advice.
